Fat Buoy Reworked

I’m sure most creatives relate to the experience of not being entirely satisfied with a piece they have made. This was certainly the case for me when making Fat Buoy. There was nothing obvious about it that jarred the eye, I was just not certain why I didn’t like it. In spite of my reservations about the piece, Fat Buoy was included in the Washed Up exhibition last year at the Crystalbrook Bailey Hotel in Cairns. It was a part of the Buoy Series which was a comment on the impact of the maritime industry on our oceans. The woven work references the ghost nets that infest the sea with other jestsam and flotsam. I frequently marvel at the capacity of our natural world to regenerate in spite of what we humans throw at it.

Since the conclusion of the exhibition, Fat Buoy was been under wraps and out of sight in my studio until one morning this week, more than twelve months later, I suddenly realised what the problem was. It was simply not finished!

Now that it has been re-worked, Fat Buoy is consigned to NorthSite Contemporary Arts Gallery Shop in Cairns Australia.
