Exploring Surface Design on Functional Ware

I recently attended a brilliant workshop at the Cairns Art Gallery with master potter, Shannon Garson. Shannon gave an exhibition of her porcelain throwing techniques before generously sharing her suface treatment processes. It was an absorbing and inspiring demonstration. I felt a quantum shift in my own approach to both throwing and surface decoration that I am dying to explore. I sense that I have a lot of work in front of me with a new journey about to unfold. Included here are some photos of my initial responses to Shannon’s workshop which are strongly influenced by her work.

These bowls and mugs will go on the market table this weekend at Mareeba, our last market for the year. It has been an intense year of making. I am still not likely to become a production potter, nor do I entertain any ambition of becoming one! However, I have watched my skills slowly evolving over 2022 and can see the value of throwing the same shape over and over again. My practice will always be a work in progress!

You can see a selection of Shannon’s gorgeous work on Instagram @shannongarson and Facebook at www.facebook.com/Shannon Garson Porcelain
